Returning to top level competition, Matthew Wright made his mark in the eventing world once again with some fantastic results. Entering 2019 with a great string of horses, the future is looking very bright.
We chatted with Matthew about what he got up to in 2018 and his aims for the upcoming year.
What was the highlight of 2018 for you?
The highlight of 2018 for me was winning another International, especially in my first year returning to eventing at top level following illness. It was a proud moment for me and made me feel like I was truly back. That and also completing some tough 3* tracks.
What challenges have you overcome in 2018?
I have overcome many mental challenges that I faced. I have suffered from depression and anxiety in the past and I found this year daunting at the start and doubted if I would be able to do what I did for so many years in the past. It’s amazing what a few years off can do to you mentally. Overcoming demons has been the biggest challenge to overcome this year.

What is your most loved Shires product of 2018?
I have a couple of most loved Shires products that I’ve used this year. Number one is the Tempest Mesh Cooler which has been a god send after cross country. I also love my Performance Breeches, they’ve had some hammer but stay so breathable and comfortable. Normally by the end of an event you end up peeling your breeches off your legs, feeling gross, but these have been amazing. The fleeces are seriously smart too on the horses and fit well.

What are your aims for 2019?
In 2019 I have 2 horses who have 4* qualifications and I would love to return to complete another couple of four stars. I want to try and get another International win at a three day and can’t wait to see how some of my younger horses will have progressed from last year. I have an exciting string of horses thanks to some great owners and feel very lucky. I would love to represent my country again at Senior level, so I want to make 2019 a year to count.
