We chatted with Matthew to find out more about his horses, career and ambitions…

Matthew Wright Eventer Team Shires

Sitting on a pony at eighteen months old and coming from an equestrian background, it was clear that Matthew was destined for a career with horses. At just eighteen years old, he completed his first Burghley Horse Trials before going on to compete for Great Britain at Junior, Young Rider and Senior level.

Who is the biggest influence in your career so far?

I would have to say my parents as without them none of this would have been possible. They have supported me from the very start. I also owe it to two very good ponies I had when I was a kid, Hannah and Conn. They filled me with so much confidence and turned me into the rider I am today.

What is the highlight of your career to date?

When I got my Senior call up to represent Great Britain at the European Eventing Championships on Park Pilot. I had backed the horse and produced him through the levels so that was a proud moment for me and my family.

Can you share your best advice with us?

Keep your mind in a good place and remain positive. I believe the mind is stronger than the body, you can be in a poorer physical shape for various reasons but if your mind is good you will still be competitive.

What are your goals for the future?

I would like to represent Great Britain again either at the Olympics, Worlds or Europeans. I would also like to compete at the Rolex Kentucky Horse Trials next year.

Tell us about your horses

I have about thirty horses in the barn at the minute. Some are liveries and some our own we’ve bred, but fourteen of them are competition horses that I have to event. I have six Advanced level horses who I would class as my top horses at present. They are:

DHI Paparazzi (Pom): A 16.1hh 2006 brown gelding by NC Amiro.

OBOS Colombus (Obie): A 16.3hh 2006 bay gelding by OBOS Quality.

Prince Mayo (Prince):  A 16.1hh 2005 bay gelding by Bonnie Prince.

Wanskjaers Carlsson (Carl): 16.2hh 2004 bay gelding by Casado.

The Corn Crake (Herbie): 16.2hh 2006 bay gelding by Concetto.

The Artist Almost Famous (Artie): 16.3hh 2008 piebald gelding by Aughabeg Artist.

What are your favourite Shires Equestrian products?

The Tempest Original Mesh Cooler. This cooler is brilliant to use after cross country, it keeps the horses temperatures regulated and with the surcingles it stays put. A lot of coolers blow away and are a nightmare to use but this is excellent.
